Grand Theft Auto Goes to Iran

Navid Khonsari, who has worked as a director on the Grand Theft Auto series and developed Alan Wake and Homefront, gave an interview to CNN where he talks about 1979, a GTA-style sandbox game based on Ayatollah Khomeini-led Iranian revolution of 1979.

Khonsari says the game starts out as a third-person shooter where the player portrays an Iranian translator who assists a special forces team attempting to rescue the hostages from the U.S. embassy. After the team gets into the country, the player morphs into a disaffected student protestor who no longer supports the changes he sees coming down from the new regime.

There's no definite release date, but Khonsari says we're at least "a year and a half away" from seeing this one in stores.
