One of the big surprises at E3 was Sleeping Dogs, a Hong Kong-set open world game that lets play as Wei Shen, an undercover cop taking on (and trying to take down) the local Sun On Yee Triad.

Developed by United Front Games as True Crime: Hong Kong, the game was dumped by Activision last year for being over budget and behind schedule. Square Enix stepped in as the new distributor and the retitled game is due for release on August 14th for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Sleeping Dogs combines elements of Grand Theft Auto with the plot of classic HK action picture Infernal Affairsa movie all about the moral ambiguities of the undercover life. The game emphasizes car chases (over 65 vehicles available to Wei Shen) but adds in the kind of slo-mo infinite firepower action familiar to John Woo movie fans, along with martial arts, gambling, cockfighting and some hot karaoke action.

The driving, fighting and shooting elements in the game look outstanding. If the game's ambitious story matches the gameplay, sleeping Dogs could be the year's biggest surprise.
