‘Call Me Maybe’ Gets a Military Video
We’ve haven’t seen one of these lip-sync videos in a while and this one featuring U.S. Marines performing Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” in Afghanistan. Freelance photographer and videographer Eric Raum worked with choreographer Randy Moresi both work with the USO and, after getting clearance from the Marine command in Kandahar, they decided to put together a dance routine simple enough for a group of Marines to learn in 30 minutes but still manly enough that they wouldn’t balk at participating.
The main shoot took an hour and Raum filled in the video scenes by wandering around the base and getting pickup shots from other men and women who serve. The YouTube version of the video already has 125K plays in just over 2 weeks and it’s sure to explode in the next few days. Great work by the Marines who were under orders to follow Raum and Moresi’s instructions and great work by the directors who do a fantastic job of reminding Americans that we’re still serving in the ‘Stan.

This is so discouraging. What have we become as a military today? I enlisted because I believed in patriotism. I fell in love with the idealistic warrior mindset. I ended up being in an area where it was anything but that. I decided to stay in because I was hoping that the real Marine Corps was much more “warrior like”. How can I believe that now? We have Marines ******* on dead bodies, making fun of locals that we are supposed to be liberating, making foolish videos advertising to the world how immature we are, service persons marching in UNIFORM at political rallies, and policy makers making changes because of political pressure and not what is combat effective. I have to ask myself, WHERE IS THE LEADERSHIP in all these cases? Absent? Empty Suits? It appears that they condone this radical behavior. Instead they are worried about bracelets of fallen heroes, tattoos, sleeves up or down, proper pronunciation of military installations, and a whole host of other crap that is meaningless.
Considering anyone of them could die at any moment,
I respect the constructive way they are handling that kinda stress. As a Gulf war vet 90–91 with a total of 20 yr’s military service. I saluate and standby my brothers, a right I have earned and treasure. Sadly you non-serving military, armchair warriors have no clue. God Bless our Troops!!!
Die at any moment? Did you notice the soldiers in the video? They were in PT gear. They did not even have weapons! They look like they felt pretty safe to me. Those Marines in the hanger? Die at any moment? Sure if they were augmented to a grunt unit, but they obviously had enough free time to choreograph a video.
Listen, I completely understand they need to be creative with the down time, because there is a lot in country, but something like this does not need to be advertised. We do not need to look like we are having a grand ole time while we are fighting. That is how we become complacent. That is how tragic situations develop.
I am sure if you told each one of these Marines, while they were in the DEP, they would eventually take part in a POP song video while they were deployed, or even in garrison, they would think you were nuts.
Back the **** off. as a VETERAN who PROUDLY served… You do what you can to make the best of ASH*&circumstance…They made this At Kandhar Air field as a way to cut loose and have some fun.
These Marines are supposed to be working. They receive all the benefits of being deployed, which are significant, they should be “acting” like they are at work.
If you saw a video of a surgeon, while in surgery, cutting open a body then making a ******* video on the side, what would you think? Lets say he or she was only in the prep stage of that surgery, do you think you’d trust him or her that much to go under and be cut up? Do you think he or she would have the proper mindset for your life altering procedure?
You are so out of place here Phil Dog and totally misinformed. Yes their lives are constantly on the line. Even if they are at a big installation like Kandahar, or Bagram, the rocket attacks are all too prevalent at these bases too. As far as the soldiers in PT gear, you can bet your *** their weapons are very close by. The stress of being away from your loved ones and the seemingly endless days of working 14 to 18 hour days really does affect you. A little lighthearted activities such as this can be a God send. Until you have experienced it, you have no right to criticize.
There just Marines having fun in Afghanistan, making most of a **** situation.…give them a break.
Seems like some marines talking an hour off the flight line to parody a dumb song is a great way to blow off some steam. Dawg you need to calm the flip down. I had the same mindset when I enlisted. Not everyone is going to think like you. And thank God we don’t all think alike or you end up standing shoulder to shoulder and firing by volley.
Your comparison of these marines to some that made some bad choices and took video of it is not only unfair but completely out of line.
Hey, Phil. Eat a ****.
I agree with Phil Dawg. I served one enlistment in the United States Air Force and while on active duty I was able to finish my B.S. degree. I am now in graduate school using the Post 9/11 GI BILL. The reason I did not stay in is because of morons like the ones in the video. I was sick of being around a bunch of immature people and most importantly complete morons barking orders at me. In the Air Force we had a ton of “down time” and the funny thing about our down time was we weren’t allowed to school work! However, clowns making these stupid videos were perfectly okay! I was told while at work I was to be “gainfully employed” and not doing “non work related academia”. I have no problem with not being allowed to do school work at work, but if I can’t do school work (which is part of my job performance rating) than some clowns shouldn’t be allowed to make a stupid video to a dumb song. Just my thoughts.
Trust me everyone knows the chair force has plenty of “down” time. Prop your shower shoe clad feet back on the desk and get back to your “vidji” games. Everyone’s experience in uniform is different. When you start thinking you are better than the people around you because they choose to do something different is when you become disenchanted such as yourself and dawg.
It’s funny that Phil Dawg would have the time to not only view the video but make numerous comments on it when he should be filling sand bags or conducting foot patrols/ mounted combat patrols or posting up as base security. Phil you need to take a breath and realize nobody works 24/7 and without taking a little time to yourself to lighten your mindset you will be the next person people are talking about that “just couldn’t handle the stress” causing more classes on combat stress and suicide prevention. And furthermore if you’re one of those military service members that has yet to deploy to a combat zone then your opinion of the whole situation is complete trash, if need be feel free to join some of my patrols or **** take over for a minute while I waste the governments frivously spent money on me while I call my daughter to tell her happy birthday from yet another combat zone.
