‘Captain Phillips’ stands off against Somali pirates

The 2009 capture of the cargo ship MV Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates and the incredible rescue of Captain Richard Phillips by Navy SEALs has inspired Captain Phillips, a new movie starring Tom Hanks and directed by Paul Greengrass.

The movie is based on Phillips'  2010 memoir A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea and intercuts Phillips' experience after he decided to let himself be taken hostage in a lifeboat in order to protect his ship and crew with the anxieties of his waiting family back home in New England.

Greengrass directed two of the best spy pictures of the last decade (The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum) and proved his skills at maximizing drama in enclosed spaces in the 9/11 drama United 93. Captain Phillips is due in theaters October 11th.
