USA goalie Tim Howard played one of the greatest matches in World Cup history yesterday, but his near-superhuman efforts couldn't prevent a 2-1 United States loss to Belgium in the knockout Round of 16.

His record 16 saves and brilliant defensive play inspired an editor to name him "Secretary of Defense of the United States of America" on Wikipedia.

Of course, cranky observers will note that Chuck Hagel's entry on Wikipedia is actually for the United States Secretary of Defense, which means that the above screenshot is most likely a Photoshop creation, a fact that doesn't make the image or Howard's performance any less awesome.

USA soccer fans have also created a petition on the Whitehouse.gov site asking that Washington National Airport (DCA) be renamed "Tim Howard National Airport" in recognition of his performance.

At age 35, this was definitely Tim Howard's last World Cup. The goalkeeper has battled Tourette's Syndrome his entire career and delivered his greatest performance in his final game. Folks who are just learning about him might want to check out this great New Yorker profile that ran in 2010 before the last World Cup.
