Since its first publication in 1986, the SAS Survival Handbook has sold millions of copies and become a worldwide classic. Sort of a special forces version of a Boy Scout manual, the book was written by John "Lofty" Wiseman, who served in the British Special Air Service as Chief Survival Instructor at the SAS Training School in Hereford, England.  Brits well tell you that the SAS boys are tougher than Navy SEALS. While that may not be exactly true, it's safe to agree that the SAS are one of the most elite fighting units in the world.

Generously illustrated with images of unsafe (and safe) plants and bugs, the book has a lot of appeal for regular campers and all the advanced disaster prep and advice for survival in extreme conditions makes for great campfire reading if you're not actually tasked with any secret missions. The latest update adds information about home security, door locks, computers, self-defense law, weapon defense, blastproofing and urbanized wildlife.

Anyone who prefers digital can get the book as an app for iPhone, iPad or Android and there are free "Lite" versions available for each platform. You can also check out some amazing instructional videos at Lofty's website. There's also ebook editions if that's what you're into. The SAS Survival Handbook makes a great gift for all aspiring Special Forces members and for all hunters and campers.
