Matt Damon plays an astronaut left behind on a faraway planet in The MartianWhich is exactly what happened to his character in Interstellar. And, like in Interstellar, Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) is charged with helping everyone figure out how to solve their outer space problems, except this time she's the astronaut commander who ignores NASA orders to attempt a risky rescue mission on Mars.

The Martian was directed by Ridley Scott and the just-released trailer makes it look like he may have returned to full Blade Runner and Alien form. 2012's Prometheus was a good movie, but The Martian looks amazing.

Based on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, The Martian features a clear action plot (as opposed to the 2001: A Space Odyssey trippiness that Interstellar aimed for), a ticking clock and an all-star cast.

Jeff Daniels is the NASA administrator who doesn't want to spend resources looking for an astronaut who should be dead and Kristen Wiig is his advisor, continuing her transition from Saturday Night Live to more dramatic roles. Chastain's astronaut crew includes Kate Mara (House of Cards), Michael Peña (End of Watch and Fury), Sebastian Stan (Captain America) and Aksel Hennie (Hercules).

Fox just moved up the release date to October 2nd, which is the same weekend that Gravity opened in 2013.
