The Best Star Trek Movie Gets a Full Blu-ray Release

Of the hundreds of TV episodes and over a dozen movies made since the original Star Trek series went off the air, there's really only one that stands with the genuine article: 1982's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The movie's just been issued on a new Blu-ray that features the first appearance of Nicholas Meyer's director's cut in high definition and a new 30-minute documentary called "The Genesis Effect: Engineering The Wrath of Khan." There's also fantastic new line drawing for the disc's artwork.

The movie is a sequel to the 1967 television episode "Space Seed" (season 1, episode 22). Ricard Montalban plays Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically-modified warrior from the 20th century exiled to Ceti Alpha V at the end of the original episode. A Starfleet crew accidentally stumbles onto his prison planet, Khan takes over their ship and sets out to capture Project Genesis, a device of god-like power, and to kill Captain Kirk in revenge.

The new transfer looks great, you get both the Director's Cut (about four minutes longer) and the original Theatrical Cut. There are commentaries for both versions by director Meyer, an additional commentary on the theatrical version by Meyer and Star Trek: Enterprise show runner Manny Coto and a text commentary on the directors cut by Star Trek experts Michael and Denise Okuda.

There are over two hours of additional documentaries ported over from earlier DVD and Blu-ray releases.
