American Sniper star Bradley Cooper is teaming up with director Todd Phillips to produced an HBO limited series based on Joby Warrick's best-selling book Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS. The book focuses on the story of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and how his 2006 death inspired the younger generation of fighters who became ISIS.

Cooper and Phillips first worked together on The Hangover trilogy and have partnered in the Joint Effort production company. Their first movie, War Dogs, is in theaters on August 19 and tells the early-2000s story of American gun runners during the war in Iraq.

Tim van Patten (The Sopranos, Game of Thrones) will direct. HBO did not announce a planned air date.
