Know Your Great Planes

The Military Channel’s Great Planes documentary series  is out now in a 2-DVD set. The series’ ten episodes cover the A-1 Skyraider, P-40 Warhawk, P-51 Mustang, B-25 Bomber, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Falcon, F/A-18 Hornet, PBY Catalina, F-84 Thunderjet and the F-104 Starfighter.

There’s a good chance you’ve seen one or two if these if you’ve been clicking channels up in the high numbers on your cable box. These DVDs look a lot better than the Military Channel does on my cable tv system but the extensive use of stock footage doesn’t make for the most high-def presentation.

Still, this would make a great gift for anyone just getting interested in military history or for any old vets in your family who like to argue with or complain about details in general interest documentaries that cover the time they served.

    Where is the Me-109 G & K, FW 190 A & D, Me 262, F-4E, JU-88, F-14 D ????? There are many others including many Russian.

The F-84 was underpowered, F-104 was a better research plane, maybe good interceptor, but not fighterbomber, called the Widowmaker by our Allies we sold to.

I am pretty ill with all these great American things shown, but never anyone elses. It may change the minds of people when they say the greatest this and that, when its all you know.

My father, a 30 yr AF pilot, told me about sitting on the runway at Luke AFB waiting to take off. There was an F-84 next to him that took off before he did and when he dad took off the F-84 was down at the end of the runway. He also called it “the widowmaker”.
