Sleep, Comrades, Sleep and Rest…

Rest comrades, rest and sleep!

Please spend a few moments, at least, doing what is right on Memorial Day. If you have watched it in person, you should. It is, in a word, humbling. Listen for the rifle salute from the funeral in the background. Watch for the woman in the wheelchair who shows her respect.

Decoration Day

Sleep, comrades, sleep and rest
On this Field of the Grounded Arms,
Where foes no more molest,
Nor sentry’s shot alarms!

Ye have slept on the ground before,
And started to your feet
At the cannon’s sudden roar,
Or the drum’s redoubling beat.

But in this camp of Death
No sound your slumber breaks;
Here is no fevered breath,
No wound that bleeds and aches.

All is repose and peace,
Untrampled lies the sod;
The shouts of battle cease,
It is the Truce of God!

Rest, comrades, rest and sleep!
The thoughts of men shall be
As sentinels to keep
Your rest from danger free.

Your silent tents of green
We deck with fragrant flowers;
Yours has the suffering been,
The memory shall be ours.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

  1. Fred Kapelski says:

    Yes, sleep. Our government rushes forward to send more to greet you. Not in the name of liberty or defending our nation, but in the name of the god of death they worship by offering the blood of our soldiers, sailors, and Marines.

    • Fred,

      Have some decency save your poisonous vitriol for another day. These brave men and women have sacrificed everything to defend our nation. I will not criticize your cowardly naivete on this day. Instead, I will use it to mourn and remember the brave fallen.

    • tom says:

    • WiskeyOne says:

      Due me a favor Fred and wash your mouth out with a revolver.

  2. Gary Chambers says:

    The war bird
    Gary Chambers-1st Cav. Div.
    His eyes pierce the morning fog as the ghosts of brave men march in line
    They are coming home at last to an eternal rest from the archives of time.
    Their souls entered God’s kingdom with only memories to share
    The love ones they left behind will be the ones that care.
    The war bird is perched in a time of peace but will soar again in times of war.
    Until then he will stand guard over the sacred garden door.
    If the enemy wars again he will soar above, but rest my men and rest well
    Fear not for he shall lead your sons to send our foes to ****
    When that day is done he will fly away and welcome the Dove to stay
